The Fourth Dimension and Non-Euclidean Geometry in Modern Art
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (August, 1983)
Author: Linda Dalrymple Henderson
Average review score:

Extraordinary Scholarship
This book conclusively reveals that fourth dimension theories and related spiritual quests constitute, at the very least, a key pillar in the development of modern art, if not its foundation. The book gives the lie to strictly formalist interpretations of the historic impetus for modern art. Perhaps more importantly, it highlights that vast amounts of art history omits the intended metaphysical content of early modern painting. If the record were set straight sooner, one wonders whether the trajectory of art would have led to contemporary art that is more substantive and enriching than it so often is. Artists such as Brice Marden, Agnes Martin, Astrid Colomar, Anne Truitt and others whose work is infused with spiritual depth would be seen as those whose work is most linked to, rather than most divorced from, the artistic heritage of modernism. With even out-of-print paperback copies of this ground-breaking book selling for well over $100, a new printing would be as welcomed as it is deserved.

thought provoking
One should not practice so-called fine arts without reading this book!!! One should be able to fill the b l a n k in his/her understanding of the contemporary relationship between arts & science! Worthy of your valuable time!

excellent
i highly recommend this book to anyone interested in turn of the century art and/or concepts of higher space. very insightful on a subject once widespread and now obscure, i.e. the fourth dimension.

Jack Tar: A Sailor's Life: 1750-1910 (Marine Art & Antiques)
Published in Hardcover by Antique Collectors Club (September, 1999)
Authors: J. Welles Henderson and Rodney P. Carlisle
Average review score:

A life of collecting to understand a sailor's life.
Welles Henderson started his maritime history collecting as a schoolboy when he invested 50 cents in the USS Constitution, aka Old Ironsides. His first piece was a small anchor, his reward for his contribution to the preservation of this revolutionary war masterpiece. After many years of collecting memorabilia of the sailor's life he started the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, now the Independence Seaport Museum. His intense interest in the shipboard life of Jack Tar comes out in the many illustrations, most in color, many drawn or painted by sailors. Most of these illustrations are of items that he has collected in his world travels. For those interested in the romantic adventures or the dull drudgery of shipboard life in the 19th century this book will be a welcome voyage.

A very great contribution to maritime history
There has never been a book quite like JACK TAR and it couldn't be more welcome. It's a real treasure chest of a book -- sumptuous to look at, a delight to read, and sound in scholarship. It's also a book to enjoy again and again. The authors and designer deserve highest praise.

A fascinating look at the lives of sailors of the past
This book gives an extremely interesting account of the lives of sailors of both the United States and Britain in the age of sailing and steam-powered ships. Through artifacts gathered by nautical antiques collector (and founder of the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia) J. Welles Henderson, we discover what valued most to these men (and a few women) and get a taste of how they passsed their time. An extremely impressive array of images shows their handicrafts (scrimshaw, macramé, etc.), as well as pointing out the dangers and drudgery inherent in the sailors' lives. Topics cover everything from discipline at sea and sailor's misbehavior on shore to acts of piracy and available medical care. Both naval and merchant service experiences are explored. I only wish such a comprehensive volume had been available when I did the research for my novel A Star to Sail By, which features a sailor of the clipper ship era. I would recommend this book to anyone with a love of sea lore and a nostalgia for the age of the great sailing ships.

Mielziner: Master of Modern Stage Design
Published in Hardcover by Watson-Guptill Pubns (15 February, 2001)
Authors: Mary C. Henderson, Frank Rich, and New York Public Library
Average review score:

A must-have
This glorious book is not only visually stunning, but thoroughly researched and extremely well written. The author offers not only a true portrait of the artist and the man, but also a comprehensive look at American theater and scene design in the 20th Century. Amazingly, it is also a good read. Any potential subject of a biography can only wish for a book this good. For anyone interested in the theater, this book is truly a must-have.

Jo Mielziner - a forgotten genius
Mary Henderson has given us an invaluable insight in the world of Jo Mielziner. So often the names of creative people who ensure that a production "works" are never known or easily forgotten by the viewing audience. The set and lighting designs of Mielziner for plays and shows like A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, South Pacific, etc. were considered brilliant and groundbreaking by the theatre world of his time. Mielziner also greatly influenced modern stage design (the East Room stage in the White House and the Denver Center Theatre, for example) and with his art and creative insight put his unique stamp on the world of modern theatre until this day. An overview of his work was long overdue. But Mary Henderson has given us far more than that. She has given us Jo Mielziner, the person, by providing fascination facts and photographs of Jo's private life. The many colorful prints of his designs and the enjoyable flow of the text make this book a "must have" and a wonderful gift for anyone interested in the history of 20th century theatre.

A must, must, must have!!!
Wow!!! Ms. Henderson has written an amazing book. Not only does it have the most beautiful color reproductions of Mielziner's work I've ever seen and in profusion, but she has also written a rich and detailed biography of Jo Mielziner.

I had been waiting for this book, but it exceeded all expectations. It is a invaluable history of modern American Stage Design, covering all the important personalities in fascinating detail, tracing the artistic progression and growth of American theater.

Anyone with an interest in American Theater in the 20th Century will benefit and be informed by this book. Her breadth of knowledge is astonishing and her digressions into side alleys are always informative and fascinating. She uses facts and figures to illuminate the shifting perspectives of the "business" of Broadway. And her analysis of design trends are intelligent and enlightening. (I would only quibble with her overly positive view of Mielziner's Architectural consulting.)

As a picture book it's great! As a biography it is marvelous! As a history of 20th Century Broadway Theater it is a must have.

Walden Pond Revisited
I had never known such a book exists until I stumbled upon it at my local bookstore. What surprised me even more was that there is a place for such a club in this world of 1,000 mhz computers and super pocket pcs.

It seems ironic that you are actually reading this review on a computer and even more so that this review was written on a pc at my work place. But isn't this book targetted more on computer users than those who never touch a computer?

Read the Lead Pencil Club manifesto, it will help you get your life back before it's all too late.

Long live the Leadites!

Voices in the wilderness
Minutes of the Lead Pencil Club is an interesting collection of bits and pieces related to the shunning of technology or the minimal use of technology. Electronic gadgets, including computers like the one on which you read this review, are complained about, fretted over, and lampooned. Some of the contributors are techies who have realized the limitations or deficiencies of modern technology over previous methods. Some contributors take after Luddites, wishing to live a simple life. This is a book that may be taken lightly or seriously. This reader found it to be a welcome voice in the wilderness of tech-dom. Using a pencil once in a while won't hurt anyone.

A celebration of the joys of an old technology
This book is an entertaining collection of short pieces that recall some of the advantages of an old technology--the lead pencil. The pieces represent a range views, ranging from a simple uneasiness with new technology to an almost total rejection of it. Still you don't have to be a technophobe to appreciate these pieces that remind us of the joys and advantages of a simpler technology and a simpler life. Many of the pieces embody the same spirit as Henry David Thoreau's chapter "Economy" in _Walden_. In fact, Thoreau is an honorary member of the Lead Pencil Club.

The New Amsterdam: The Biography of a Broadway Theatre

The New Amsterdam: the Biography of a Broadway Theatre
This is the most beautiful book I own. I had been to the New Amsterdam in its most painful days. At this time I saw Mondo Cane and would not sit down it was such a flea bag theatre. It was a historical sight...Ziegfeld Folies et al. I really felt sad as I stood there feeling the greatness that had passed; at the time I felt... forever. Disney has brought the theatre and the feeling back. I witnessed this with my viewing of LION KING. What I felt had been lost forever can be seen in this wonderful book. The pictures before and after make one feel that nothing is impossible. The beauty that had decayed and looked irreversable has been accomplished and this book, and this theatre stand as testaments to what can be accomplished. Anyone who has walked into a theatre and felt the past rekindle will love to read this inspiring book. This book shows the cycle of a wonderful theatre and all that it was and lost and then saved. It symbolizes the rise and fall of 42nd Street as well as one beautiful theatre. This book will for once and for all show what a thetare can be and fall to and rise above. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in Theatres anywhere and what they should symbolize to all of us.

An excellent history of the New Amsterdam Theater
This book offers an excellent overview of the New Amsterdam Theater from the beginning through the recent renovation with discussions of the architecture of the building, the decorative artwork and of course a history of shows that have played at the theater from the beginning.

A Book As Beautiful As The New Amsterdam Theatre Itself
Do you know a theater buff who deserves the perfect gift this holiday season? Disney's Hyperion has just released the ideal book for anyone who loves the theater: The New Amsterdam: The Biography of a Broadway Theatre.

The book is as striking as New York's famed and recently refurbished New Amsterdam Theatre. Opening from the center to reveal the main stage framed by delicate murals and art nouveau decorations, the book is brimming with pictures. It begins with decades old photographs and sketches that depict the grace and splendor of the theater when it opened in 1903 and concludes with before-and-after pictures demonstrating the care and effort that went into the building's restoration.

This book does not simply tell the story of the rise, fall, and rebirth of the Broadway landmark, it recounts the history of American theater as it passed over the stage of the New Amsterdam. From the Ziegfeld Follies to Fred Astaire to Jack Benny to Disney's recent staging of King David, the New Amsterdam welcomed America's most famous and talented performers. The New Amsterdam: The Biography of a Broadway Theatre makes this history come alive with photos of movie posters, actors, sets, and costumes.

Disney is to be commended for committing their resources to the painstaking and comprehensive restoration project that has saved the New Amsterdam from its undeserved fate as a forgotten and abandoned relic from Broadway's' glamourous past. They can also be congratulated for offering this remarkable book that preserves and shares 94 years of America's artistic heritage.

The New Cuisine of Hawaii: Recipes from the Twelve Celebrated Chefs of Hawaii Regional Cuisine
Published in Hardcover by Villard Books (May, 1994)
Author: Janice Wald Henderson
Average review score:

My most treasured cookbook!
I am an adventurous cook, and I'm skilled at putting complex meals together, and on time. I have a collection of more than 100 cookbooks, and this is the one that gets pulled out for EVERY dinner party, every special event: it is without question, an incredible resource! My copy is falling apart from overuse. Most recipes have long lists of spices, but the actual preparation is simple. Excellent substitutions (ex: orange roughy for pink snapper, not normally found on the mainland) are recommended, and the suggested wine pairings are very helpful. I have tried 74 of the 118 recipes; there are only 2 that I would not ever try again.

The New Cuisine of Hawaii: Recipes from the Twelve. . .
I had seen this book since my college undergraduate years at various bookstores. Recently, Honolulu Magazine (August 2001) listed this books as a possible "collector's item," since it is now out of print. Although I begged everybody to buy it for me as a birthday present, I just couldn't wait any longer. I ended up buying it for myself. I like to read it before going to sleep at night in my futon.
The book originally sold for $... in 1994. I was very lucky to buy it used for $..., from another used bookseller.

this is a wonderfully original book!
so many delicous recipes and pictures. the recipes i cooked, made my family and i feel like we were actually in hawaii in a fancy resteraunt. delicoius! i look forward to more books on this subject!

Novell's Guide to Troubleshooting NDS
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (01 October, 1999)
Authors: Peter Kuo and Jim Henderson
Average review score:

Totally Recommended
This book is the best I have read on this subject. Its biggest asset is the fact it starts from the basics of NDS and builds on this information. It includes real world examples (which I found invaluable in both solving and understanding the problem) and all solutions are explained in "straight talking English". Can't wait for the next release !

The Definitive Source For NDS Troubleshooting
If you are responsible for a production NDS environment, READ THIS BOOK! It is fully updated for the latest NDS changes, and provides a thorough understading of NDS processes and troubleshooting methods. The only resource on NDS that is more comprehensive is Novell's Logic Source for NDS II.

An incredible resource for all CNE's!
Peter Kuo and Jim Henderson are awesome! If you liked their NDS Troubleshooting book, you'll love this Guide to Troubleshooting NDS. An easy read, this book provides background information on the NDS and how it actually works...in plain English. It builds upon this background information to include troubleshooting techniques to help you successfully manage and repair a NetWare network. It also includes easy to read tables with NDS Error codes, as well as DSTRACE and DSREPAIR switches with explanations in one convenient manual. As a side benefit, it includes a significant amount of information to help prepare for Novell's Certified Directory Engineer tests. Thanks for my new Bible guys!

OPEN is the answer to many of the industry's problems.
OPEN is the answer to many of the industry's problems. Sure it isn't panacea, but it is the next best thing we currently have.

Comprehensive discussion of entire object oriented process
This is a book that provides a comprehensive discussion of the entire object oriented process. It really provides first rate support in terms of the design of a software engineering process. Well done.

A very useful, much needed book
This book provides what has been missing in Object Technology: a process. The book is not yet another methodology but is a properly put together full lifecycle process that can be tailored for small, medium, large to super large projects of all types. It provides the much needed Software Engineering process framework lacking in all other OO methods.

The Open Toolbox of Techniques (Open Series)
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (17 June, 1999)
Authors: Brian Henderson-Sellers, Anthony Simons, and Houman Younessi
Average review score:

Consultant's Close Companion
This book is one of a series on OPEN (Object-oriented Process Environment and Notation). Unlike the other books in the OPEN series, this book is independent of any methodology and can also be used in non object-oriented environments.

The title is appropriate: this 426 page book and accompanying CD ROM is a toolbox of techniques that can be applied in any environment or within the context of any methodology. It is, literally, an encyclopedia of techniques that consultants and business analysts can use to perform a variety of tasks or produce associated deliverables.

If you are using this book as a generic compendium of tools and techniques, or you are not interested in OPEN, you can safely skip the first chapter that is an overview of OPEN. If you work within an object-oriented environment you may find chapters 2 through 4 useful. These chapters describe OPEN and how it relates to other O-O approaches. If not, you can also skip these and jump to Appendix A, which is the heart of the book.

Appendix A is a collection of core techniques in alphabetical order ranging from abstract class identification to workshops. There are over one hundred core techniques, each of which is presented using the following format: Technique Name and Star rating - 1 star = well tried, 2 stars = reasonably well validated, 3 stars = experimental. Focus, typical tasks for which the technique is used, related techniques, entry criteria and underpinning concepts. This header information is followed by: Technique description Technique useage Deliverables and output

The CD ROM contains additional techniques that make this one of the most comprehensive resources available to a consultant. The content on the CD ROM is in PDF format and is divided into three additional appendices. Additional techniques are in two of these appendices, with the third covering supporting reference material.

What I like about this book is the wide coverage of techniques. All of the standard fare is covered, and a lot of esoteric ones are also included. I use it as a memory jogger or idea book when I an trying to find that "perfect" approach to performing a task or creating a deliverable. Some minor irritations include the star ratings - I found them to be somewhat ambiguous, and the fact that the techniques are presented in alphabetical order instead of grouped by class. A cross-reference in the front of the book would remedy that complaint.

However, this book deserves a solid five stars because it is comprehensive and packs a lot of information into 426 pages and a CD ROM. If you are a consultant or analyst this book is money well spent, and will make a great addition to your short list of everyday tools and references.

Excellent value for money.
This book contains lots of interesting techniques, many of which are essential to the business of software development. Excellent value for money.

I keep using this book. I wonder why?
If you are serious about the actual business of developing OO software, don't go past this book. Have one on your shelf, although mine doesn't stay there very long.

Pilgrimage: The Book of the People
Published in Hardcover by Lightyear Pr (December, 1993)
Author: Zenna Henderson
Average review score:

Appealing to my sense of spirituality, fantasy, and science
Zenna Henderson's people are the epitome of what most earthlings wish to be: loving, innocent, humorous to the point of levitation, telekenetic. They're new adventure on earth becomes more and more complete as the different "landings" find one another. To have found an earthling school teacher who patiently endeavors to understand the children and their ways, and who finally finds acceptance by their parents through her delicate position was truly a stroke of luck (or could it have been heaven-ordained?)

I have been re-reading my "Zenna" books for 25 years, and they are truly becoming worn. I've shared them with my friends and children and am now ready to start with my grand-children. The stories are very wholesome, and good "grandma" builders. I only hope they last a little longer!

Get the "Ingathering" reprint -- it's worth it!
I've read and re-read Zenna Henderson's works since I was in high school. I'm not someone who re-reads books, but these are _the_ exception for me. They've always been an enjoyable read. At least the People stories have been gathered and re-published under the title "Ingathering". Get that.

Now, if someone would just re-publish her non-People stories. I've about worn out my old paperbacks!

If you can get a copy.....READ IT!!!
I know this book is out of stock, but if you enjoy any/all kinds of science fiction, I think you should give Zenna Henderson a try. Her stories of the People are touching, magical and will stay with you for a long, long time
